Grant will expand airport fire station

Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport in Highfill will use a $ 654, 000 federal grant to expand its fire station, members of Arkansas’ congressional delegation announced Tuesday.
Arkansas Sens. Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor, both Democrats, and Rep. John Boozman, a Republican whose 3 rd Congressional District covers Northwest Arkansas, announced the grant by the Department of Transportation.
The expansion will ensure a specialized fire truck, owned by the airport since June, will be stored properly, airport officials said. Space constraints have forced the airport to store one of its four trucks either outside or inside the station in a way that makes it unavailable for emergency use, said Kelly Johnson, airport director.
The added space will include room for two more fire trucks and will give the station a total of six bays.
The airport will pay about $ 85, 000 for the expansion, Johnson said.
