It’s best to fit jewelry to the mom

Susan Shieldkret is a jewelry connoisseur and founder and president of Newport Coast, Calif.-based The Passionate Collector (thepassionatecol lector. com ). You won’t fi nd mother’s rings on her Web site — the company offers one-of-akind or limited quantity pieces of jewelry that “you won’t fi nd everywhere else.” But because people’s tastes vary, Shieldkret offers these general tips for selecting jewelry for Mother’s Day: If the woman you’re buying for has small children who might tug on her jewelry, select smaller chains and earrings, especially if you’re selecting jewelry she might wear every day. Also, consider smaller bracelets for everyday wear for this type of person. It’s uncomfortable to lift a child with a large bangle digging into your wrist.
Ask yourself about the person’s lifestyle. If the person you’re buying for is on the phone a lot, maybe earrings that drop would be more comfortable than bulky studs that could get pressed into the earlobe when she’s on the phone.
The perfect gift for your mom is something that’s as individual as she is — something she could wear often or something special for special occasions. Whatever it is, I am sure that, given with love from her family, it will be something that any mom would treasure. Follow your intuition. If you think it’s something she’ll love, it probably is.
